What makes a good Midjourney prompt

Midjourney responds best to short, concrete phrases in order of importance: the subject first, then the setting, then the look (medium, lighting, color, lens). Parameters such as --ar for aspect ratio go at the very end.

An image-to-prompt tool does the hard part, describing what's actually in the picture, and puts it in that order, so you start from a solid draft instead of a blank line.

Step by step

Reading the prompt you get

The first phrases describe the subject: who or what is in the picture and what it's doing. Change these to keep the style but swap the content, for example the same lighting and mood with a different character.

The middle phrases carry the style: medium (photo, oil painting, 3D render), lighting (golden hour, softbox, neon), color and composition. Keep these to preserve the look.

The ending holds the parameters. --ar is set from your image's shape, --v 7 selects the model version, and --style raw appears for photos to keep Midjourney from over-stylizing.

Tips for closer results

Be specific where it matters. If the tool writes 'a dog', and your image shows a corgi puppy, say so.

Remove details you don't care about. Every extra phrase competes for attention; shorter prompts often match the mood better.

Iterate on one thing at a time. Change the lighting words, run again, then move on to color. You'll learn which words Midjourney listens to.

Use the image itself too. Midjourney can take an image URL at the start of a prompt as a reference; combining it with the generated text gives the closest match.

Stable Diffusion and other generators

The same image can be described in other formats. The Stable Diffusion style gives comma-separated tags plus a negative prompt of defects to avoid. The General style writes a natural paragraph that works well in DALL·E, Flux and Ideogram.
